2006 Christmas List

That sounds good Libby. Everyone should put some gift ideas by his or her name to help the person that drew your name (and so that that person does not get you something you do not want). To update the list simply log into blogger and then edit this post or simply copy paste the last post to a new post and ad your new gift ideas. Also, if you would like to take a look at last years list to get any ideas you can go here: http://themayerfamilyblog.blogspot.com/2006/10/christmas-list-2005.html

Good Morning!

We have been quite busy lately with a variety of situations. Lately we have been extremely busy with the youth ministry at our church, especially myself. Engage has been incredible so far and is growing at a healthy rate. We see about 1-5 new kids per week, as long as we do not take a week off. It has been truely amazing to watch the girls that I have been working with and exhorting, Jenell and Megan plus more, really desire God! God has been so good in their lives and has put a desire inside of them to start reading their Bibles and spend time praying, which was ignited in their lives through Stephen's discipleship class.

Right now I am spending a great deal of time working on the marketing aspect of Engage. It is a bit tricky to figure how to market this organization since there are so many different outlets to market towards. Each market is vastly different as well. I love marketing and have always excelled at it, so this is a joyful job to me. While I'm not figuring out the marketing aspects I am the counselor for the youth and their families as well as drama ministry leader. Basically I am using my three major strengths and enjoying it while I do so.

Besides that I have been spending time with my beautiful son, Jesiah. Right now he is crawling, pulling himself up on stuff, saying new words almost every day, and trying to walk. So far Jesiah hasn't gotten many bumps or bruises, but I am sure that is to come. I only wish it wasn't winter as he starts to learn to walk, because that makes it difficult to play outside in Michigan weather.

Another mini-news of mine; I am switching colleges. The online classes are just not working for me. I am disappointed by the lack of teacher involvement in the majority of my classes and the minimal amount of points you can earn, 600 points for 6 weeks of work. My plan is to switch to Delta. At the moment, I have not decided whether or not I will stick to Accounting or switch to Interior Designing. With accounting it would be a promised steady job, which I love to work. For interior designing I would be starting my own business and it would be rooted either in Midland or Ann Arbor. I have always desired for something that I can call my own, which owning a business would fulfill that desire for me.

The final news we have is that we are looking for a house. We have had a few oppurtunities but nothing that really screamed, "BUY ME!" We may have just found a home this week that we are willing to purchase. The house was sold in 2001 for $147,000 and is being sold for $99,900 right now. We hope to settle for $85,000-$90,000 on this home. The house is 2000 sq.ft. plus another 800 sq. ft. partially finished in the basement. The home is located in the township about two blocks from here across from an elementary school, so the neighborhood will not go bad. In addition to all this it sits on 0.36 of an acre which is a huge lot for the city or township. There would be room for the kids to play. Please pray that the house is in good condition and that we can settle for $85,000 on the house. That would be a tremenduous blessing!

We love you guys and miss you all who are not in Michigan!

Kaley Mayer.

Weekend in Chicago

Update from Chicago

Hey everyone,

Here's a glimpse into our life in the big city and what we have been up to the last few weeks.

We have officially begun to re-arrange our studio again (I think this is the third time). It's funny how many new and tantalizing ideas you come up with when you are forced to get creative with your living space--this one I credit fully to Dave (who brings the majority of the creativity in this marriage).

I don't have pictures of the before and after yet, but we just switched from a daybed with a pop-up trundle (which makes up a King size bed) to a Murphy bed which is bolted to the floor in our closet, to be folded up against the wall in the day, and down at night. Dave found some great deals on everything, so we are now sleeping on a wonderful memory foam mattress -- and excitedly awaiting our new memory foam pillows:) We did have to downsize from a King-size bed to a Full, but we think that the new added space within our apartment will definately make it worth it. Pictures soon to come of our transformed home--or, if you come up to Chicago this weekend with the majority of the family, you'll get to see the change first hand.

Other than this little project at home, I have been keeping very busy between work and school. I'm taking 17 credits right now, and I am really feeling the extra work load of my Senior year. I am also working as a nanny in the city for three different families (4 girls total at the same time), and wonderfully enough this only takes up 15 hours per week, and it pays so well I am able to cover all our bills and save a bit -- this is a huge blessing since Dave still hasn't found a job. Please keep Dave's job-hunting process in prayer -- he has applied for a job at Moody, as well as several chaplain positions around the city (at a couple of major colleges) and he recently came across a job where he could give basketball lessons -- the latter is the job he is really interested in doing, but in order to make it possible we would need to have a second car (and at this time we don't have the finances for one). So, your prayers are appreciated. He loves to work, so working a mere 12 1/2 hours doing maintenance at a church each week isn't enough to keep him as busy as he would like.

Well, I think that's it for now. We look forward to getting updates via the blog on how everything is going in each of your lives. Hopefully we can take a bunch of pictures this weekend when the gang is with us here in the city, and then post them up for everyone. By the way-- what's this about Thanksgiving in Boston? Anyone know what the plan is for Christmas this year? Talk to you all soon!

Love,
~Alayna~

House Hunting ...

Hey Mayers (and Millers) ... both here and abroad! First a salute to Phil ... great idea! I'm going to try to get some updated pics of Jesiah on here for everyone to see. He's getting big ... crawling around everywhere and pulling himself up. Only a four more months and he'll be our little one year old ... wow how time flies. Being a Dad is a lot of fun ... I highly recommend the experience! Just be sure you develop patience and endurance in yourself BEFORE you get to that point.

Kaley and I are infrequently (and sometimes frequently) looking for a good deal on a house in the Saginaw area. We think we might have found one so please keep your fingers crossed and we might be in our own house within a few months. We wouldn't mind if you put in a good word for us with the Master of the Universe (God) ... we're starting to get tired of apartment living. Really I should give the credit to where credit is due: Kaley is the mastermind behind this ... she's been searching for hours and hours for a good deal. She found a house valued at about $160,000 and it's now bank owned. The bank wants only $20,000 for it.

I'll have to tell you about Engage and everything God is doing here in Saginaw with our youth initiative. In brief we are working to build a youth center, double or triple the size of our youth ministry every year, and are focused on bringing 90+ youth to the next BattleCry event in April. We are praying that God will move strongly to save this generation.

Unfortunately we won't be able to get out to Boston this year for Thanksgiving ... but hope to be able to do more traveling next year.

I now must get back to working on my current business programming project. Hope all is well for you and yours.

Mayer Family Blog

Hello all,
I have begun this blog for all of us for family stuff - pictures, happenings etc http://themayerfamilyblog.blogspot.com. I would like to make everyone in our family a user so that each of us can add to it as we like. I would also recommend the use of Google Reader to keep up on this blog and any others you may be interested in (Alayna's, Stephens, etc). I think that I am missing PJ's email address, so if you have it please email it to me and I will invite him to the user list. Thanks.
